This morning was busy, we caught 57 birds, mostly Willow warblers and Blackcaps. Everything comes down to the two first hours, and then calm returns. We also caught a few Robins, including a pully still in its juvenile plumage, this one is definitely not ready to migrate yet.

We took advantage of the warm, bird-quiet afternoon to go for a swim in the sea. First swim in the Northern sea ever! The water was a bit chilly at the beginning, but the experience was very pleasant. It might become our afternoon tradition for the few days we have left.

It was a windy morning, but no rain (unlike yesterday). We finally had some activity at the ringing station, with a total of 37 birds from 9 species! In the evening, we discovered we were out of running water from the main tank. Living on an island and enjoying the confort of the mainland requires a bit of logistics and thanks to Halvard, we located the backup tank, which is full, thankfully to the person that refilled it. We still need to figure out how to supply the house with those reserves.

This morning was quite windy and very quiet in captures and observations. Early in the afternoon, Silje and Halvard left the island and went birdwatching on their way back to the mainland. They got lucky and observed a Temminck's stint (Calidris temminckii) on Hoftøya.

Another quiet day at the ringing station with a bit of wind. We closed the mistnets early this afternoon and we set off to explore the surrounding area by boat. It was brilliant to discover other landscape, the islands of rocks smoothed and shaped by the ice cap, and go birdwatching. We were so happy to see the seals and waders in stopover during their migration. In the evening, we opened the mistnets to try to catch nightjars and storm petrels but we did not get lucky this time.

Another quite day in captures at the station. During the evening, Meryl caught an Eurasian Woodcock.
Halvard and Silje came over for the weekend, we ringed two Nightjars at the end of the day, an adult and a juvenile.

Today, the swallows were migrating very actively. We controlled a Trush Nightingale that was ringed 10 days ago. This species is quite a rarety in France so we were very happy to see one.
The sound recording of the night revealed some Tree Pipit migrating and a Golden Plover.

We are observed a caterpillar of Cerura vinula, the Puss Moth. This species is distinctive appearance and impressive caterpillar. The adults are fluffy and pale grey, while the larvae are bright green with a forked tail and striking defensive behaviour. When threatened, it raises its head to reveal a reddish “face” and waves its tail — and can even squirt formic acid at predators. It is typically associated with willow and aspen, and is widespread across Europe, including here in Norway.

Another calm day at the station, but with a nice diversity of species. We caught another Icterine Warbler, and we had a much higher proportion of adult Willow Warblers compared to last week. At the end of the day, we enjoyed a beautiful sunset from the top of the island.

While the morning was quiet in terms of captures at the station, Terje, Hans Erik, and Magne came over to visit us and galvanized the day. Hans Erik, the gentleman, resupplied us with Bamse Mums after we had eaten everything in just two days.

After a coffee break and some sweets, they installed a new television in the living room — strictly for presenting pedagogical content and videoconferences, of course. It will never be used to watch football games… or maybe it will.

The weather is expected to be more cloudy in the coming days; perhaps it will bring us a few birdies.

A rainy day. Between several rain showers, we captured 15 birds with some cool species. Finally, one Tree pipit ended up in the mistnets ! No notable sightings.

Today was the best day so far in terms of both captures and species diversity since we arrived. We had the pleasure of ringing a young Great Spotted Woodpecker and an Icterine Warbler, a species we don’t often ring in France.

In the afternoon, we saw Common Redpolls, Northern Wheatears, and Whinchats. Hopefully they will end up in the mist nets soon!
