Hello everyone,
After a magical evening with the spectacle of the Northern Lights, a starry, windless night that promised a beautiful day of bird banding. But ultimately, the birds were few and far between this morning, and the results are below our expectations, though still with some pleasant surprises such as a twite on the first round, this Eurasian Sparrowhawk ringing in Sweden, and our first Fieldfares banded this morning after a notable arrival yesterday. Among the regular, but always enjoyable, sightings of a group of over 400 Eiders passing in front of the house and flocks of Bohemian Waxwings Dagens ringmerking: sidensvans 1, gjerdesmett 1, rødstrupe 3, svarttrost 1, gråtrost 2, måltrost 1, munk 2, fuglekonge 2, stjertmeis 14, blåmeis 1, trekryper 1, bokfink 1, grønnfink 23 og bergirisk 1 All the best Seb and Henry

Hello everyone,
Waxing and windy day! The days go by, but today's weather was very windy with a cold north wind. Henry tried to open a few nets at dawn, but it only lasted long enough for him to realize it was wiser to go home for a coffee and keep an eye on the single net in front of the house. Given the strength of the wind, he took the opportunity to explore the island and do some birdwatching, adding to the list of species observed since the beginning of his stay: he spotted one Black Guillemot and one Red-breasted Merganser. Meanwhile, back at the house, Sébastien tried to take advantage of a lull in the weather and opened the four nets near the house again. At the end of the day, we had a good day's results, having caught most of a group of Bohemian Waxing who were too greedy to eat the apples and juniper berries. We also caught another Twite in the evening. The weather tomorrow looks favorable for some great shots! Dagens ringmerking: sidensvans 10, munk 1, fuglekonge 2, bjørkefink 1, bergirisk 1 og dompap 1. All the Best Seb and Henry Hello everyone!
The weather conditions were ideal, with a starry sky and no wind—perfect for bird banding. Mid-morning, we had the pleasure of a visit from Frédérik, and together we were able to band about ten long-tailed tits and a few waxwings caught on the apples at the feeder. He was delighted to see the Hume's warbler recaptured that morning, and it takes some stamina to run from the southern tip to the station! We were pleased to band a great spotted woodpecker, but the surprise of the day came with the capture of a common rosefinch, a first ringing for Sébastien, which we celebrated in style that evening with a glass of good red wine. At the end of the day, the evening rain prevented us from opening the nets to capture another bird; the next episode will be tomorrow. Third mention for the island...and a clarification on the end of yesterday's night - Boreal Owl: 2 We concluded the blog last night with the recapture of a boreal owl. Terje conducted his little investigation and informed us that the individual was captured last Sunday a few dozen kilometers from our station. This is very good information, and this is where bird ringing provides valuable information on bird movements. During this windless and very starry night, we also captured a second individual. What luck! A night of captures with two boreal owls! Our day began with a majestic sunrise, as the Ferder store offers us when the weather is favorable. The highlight was the capture of a Hume's Leaf Warbler in mid-morning. The pleasure of this catch was all the more intense because we were able to share the observation with Terje's team, who came to visit us and also to reinforce the port. The second record for the ringing station. The previous one ringed 15.11.2011. Also the first record (if accepted) for Norway in 2025. (In France, this is a rare species, and obviously, it was a first for us!) Like every evening, we ended the day with a tweet catch. This day will undoubtedly remain etched in our memories, both for the quality of the catches and for the complicity of the exchanges with our Norwegian friends who came today. Terje Axelsen Hello everyone,
Blâmeis Day! After a rain shower just before dawn, we opened the nets with a light north wind and temperatures that heralded winter. A few birds were in the nets with the first rounds, then about thirty blue tits and coal tits appeared, mixed together, and the round, according to the story, repeated itself, this time with the long-tailed tit. At the same time, Hans Erik arrived to bring us everything we needed to extend our stay (food, etc.). We were able to share a coffee with some hot chocolate (his little treat!), and we thank him very warmly again. As for observation, a water rail was again in front of the house, and two peregrine falcons had arrived on the island. And to end this beautiful day, we had the pleasure of retraped a young Boreal Owl early in the night. All the best Henry and Seb Hello,
Time change and change in wind pattern. A northerly wind is now blowing across the island, bringing a bit of cold and a few flocks of migratory passerines. We observe flights of waxwings, bramblings, twitchers, and bulfinches. The weather allows us to ring all day. The first round is interesting for us: They are only northern passerines; long-tailed tits, bramblings, and redwings. In the late afternoon, an exploration to discover the southern tip of the island, sheltered from the wind, allows us to make a very nice observation of little auks very close by. This observation concludes a very beautiful week. We once again open some nets for the Tegmalm's owl Dagens ringmerking: spurvehauk 2, sidensvans 1, gjerdesmett 1, rødstrupe 4, rødvingetrost 1, fuglekonge 7, stjertmeis 11, bjørkefink 13, grønnfink 14, grønnsisik 5, bergirisk 1, brunsisik 1 og dompap 14. All the best Seb and Henry Hello everyone,
A day with rain showers and beautiful clear spells, a strong SE wind forced us to close some of the nets. Fortunately, the nets around the feeder, still very attractive, allowed us to capture several dozen Bramblings. This activity at the feeder attracted two Sparrowhawks, which skillfully avoided the nets. As for birdwatching, we noticed a small number of birds arriving on the island, particularly Finches. Dagens ringmerking: gjerdesmett 1, rødstrupe 4, rødvingetrost 1, fuglekonge 8, blåmeis 1, trekryper 2, bokfink 1, bjørkefink 37, grønnfink 4 og bergirisk 1. All the best Seb and Henry Hello everyone,
Despite waking up early in the morning hoping to open the nets, it was rainy and windy for almost the entire day, creating numerous water channels on the island. Calm returned in the late afternoon, allowing us to offer the nets and tag two new twites, as well as discovering a second water rail on the northern part of the island; the one in front of the cabin is still present. And this evening, we hope to tag an owl to round out the day. Dagens ringmerking: gjerdesmett 1, rødstrupe 1, svarttrost 1, rødvingetrost 1, fuglekonge 1 og bergirisk 2. All the best Seb and Henry Hello everyone,
As announced by Hans Erik and Terje, we had a very beautiful day until late afternoon, and the wind finally picked up at sunset. This day allowed us to have a nice diversity of species for the ringing station, with 17 species in total. And although relatively few birds were observed on the island, we were pleasantly surprised to see a goldcrest ringed in Denmark. We also ringed the first Bramblings, Coal Tits, and a group of Long-tailed Tits since our arrival on the island. Dagens ringmerking: sidensvans 1, gjerdesmett 14, rødstrupe 4, svarttrost 2, rødvingetrost 1, fuglekonge 27, stjertmeis 5, blåmeis 17, kjøttmeis 4, svartmeis 2, trekryper 1, bokfink 1, bjørkefink 1, grønnfink 17, grønnsisik 5, bergirisk 1 og dompap 9. All the best Henry ans Seb Despite a rainy start to the day that prevented us from properly ringing in the morning, the end of the day was much better with a timid sun allowing us to ring this time in much better conditions. The surprise of the day will be this female common redstart, a late data for the season. We also had the pleasure of ringing a young male sparrowhawk, our first siskins and again 2 twite. In terms of observation, there are a few birds on the island, the water rail is always present in front of the house and can be heard day and night! The flock of waxwings is still present and feeds on the viburnum berries. Dagens ringmerking: spurvehauk 1, rødstjert 1, rødvingetrost 2, munk 9, fuglekonge 2, trekryper 1, grønnfink 7, grønnsisik 1 og bergirisk 2. All the best Henry and Seb |
