The storm Ashley has really shaken Store Færder the last day. The names of storms and hurricanes by the way are predetermined, and alternate between boys' and girls' names in an alphabetical order. We are now struggling with Ashley, and let us hope we don’t reach Xavier by the end of December. Ashley is not a tropical hurricane with wind energy build up from released energy in warm ocean waters. Ashley has her energy from high altitude winds (jetstreams), and from pressure gradients between southern warm and colder arctic air masses. Still, hurricane wind speeds (> 31 m/s = 112 km/t) has been measured several places along the Norwegian west coast. In stormy weather as offered by Ashley, a walk around the island and to “Speidersletta” is a must, just to feel the true forces of nature. Reassuring that the station boat is safe in Sandøsund. Hi,
The storm Ashley is still embracing the Island. After a rainy night the wind increased during the morning making it too difficult to open the nets, but we still tried to open the net in front of the station allowing us to check it continuously. Captures counts 2: gjerdesmett 1 and munk 1. We were able to take advantage of not opening the nets to discover the island and do some bird watching, but also to tidy up and clean the house. The wind blew all day and very few boats passed through the Oslofjord today." Best regards Sebastien and Henry
